You might have to record your observations, or else saying "can't configure the switch" is unclear.

I set up these kinds of switches frequently, which means I might be able to guide you toward a simple setup. But since I don’t have visibility into the current status of the switch, I’m limited in providing specific advice.

Precisely what you're asking is unclear. It sounds like you're suggesting the device can't be set up directly, possibly because of missing serial communication or a corrupted setup. You might need to contact support for a TFTP firmware update or similar troubleshooting steps.

It came from a former server farm, possibly completely erased?

It relies on the circumstances they eliminated them from. When the server farm ceased operations, they remain untouched. You’ll still require a console cable to set up remote access and maybe to reset the configuration.

I believe that's the case. Could you explain what you mean by "can't configure it"? Would it help if I understand whether you're experiencing an issue with getting a login prompt on a specific IP address and being unable to access it? It’s also possible they haven’t made any changes, leaving it set up in a way unsuitable for a home user. I’d recommend following the password recovery instructions here, as you’ll likely need to handle that step. Also, remove any remaining configuration settings—turning off the web server is common in business environments. https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/do...900xl.html If you discover it can’t boot due to missing firmware, you’ll need the SolarWinds TFTP server and a current firmware version from the switch. Try contacting someone with access to cisco.com login details; don’t search for firmware randomly online.
