Hello, I'm looking to upgrade my work/game station for programming and game development (Unity and Unreal Engine). I'm facing a performance issue and need advice. Should I consider the AMD 3950X, the i9-9900K, or hold off and upgrade later? New AMD CPUs are unlikely to use AM4 sockets, and given Intel's past moves, it might be a cheaper move. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

3900x or 3950 works well, though it depends on your workload.

If you require it right away, go for the 3650x. Otherwise, there hasn’t been much recent information about Zen 3—Comet Lake or whatever they’ll call it—so it seems to be looking promising, at least for now.

i7-7700k appears to be functioning normally with a stock clock of 70°C across all cores when idle. I'll wait for the new cooler to verify. If it doesn't perform as expected, I'll replace it and run an LM test.

It seems unlikely Stock Cooler isn't effective; you likely have MCE producing more voltage.

I don't have a stock cooler. I'm running SilentiumPC Fortis 3 HE1425 v2.

In fact, most experts agree the latest Ryzen chips will still fit on AM4 (Zen 2+). Zen 3 remains uncertain since AMD promised support until 2020 and its launch is planned for 2021. The same design and manufacturing process are used as previous versions. Intel hasn’t announced any changes this year either. For developers, the choice depends on your existing setup and whether today’s offerings meet your performance needs. Your budget also plays a key role. I’m not very experienced with Unity or Unreal Engine, but if you can stretch your funds, a 3900X or 3950X could provide significant gains over the 7700K. Someone more familiar with those tools would give a clearer answer. You might want to go for a high-end option like a 3960X or 3970X if you can afford it.

I understand I can't afford a Threadripper, but my main concern is whether I should hold off for the next AMD generation or if it makes no sense since power gains will be minimal compared to the previous one.
