Windows Vista stood out to me as my top choice among all operating systems, definitely not a joke.

Windows 7 behaves similarly to Windows 8, so features from 8 should function on 7 and vice versa. The support for Windows 7 will continue for some time.

Ensure you have an authentic version of 7 ready, otherwise modify the setup by targeting a Linux system on the older machine, and consider purchasing a fresh OS only when necessary.

Microsoft resolved most of the issues that bothered users in Windows 8, and the metro display looks much improved.

If you're using Windows 7, upgrading now might not be necessary. Everyone agrees it will stay supported for a while longer.

Windows 8 and above. Overall, really great system. I do not regret switching to it.

I've been lucky in that I've been buying every other OS and have dodged the really crappy ones. I went from Win3.1 to Win98, skipped 2k/ME, had XP, skipped Vista, now I'm on Win7, I'll be holding out for Win9 hoping they learned from Win8 to just come out with 2 OS's 1 optimized for touchscreen/app type users and 1 optimized for business or for those who prefer the older Start button format, etc. Time will tell.

I haven't encountered any issues with w8.1. On Windows 7 custom systems I've faced numerous problems. It might be due to them being prebuilt and of poor quality. Uncertain.

Choose Windows 8 or 8.1. You may use the Windows Marketplace to switch to Windows 8.1 at no cost. For the most affordable base edition, opt for the simplest version of 8.
