This old laptop is still working well for basic tasks like browsing the web. Since you're using Windows 7, you might want to consider upgrading to a more recent version for better performance and security. It's fine now, but an upgrade could be beneficial in the future.

Windows 8, 8.1 or 10 are generally up-to-date with security patches. Windows 7 poses risks and isn't suitable for network use. For heavier systems, a Linux installation might be a better choice.

It hasn't been updated with any security patches since January 2020, except for those who bought ESU Licensing. The system remains exposed to various harmful exploits that won't be resolved, so it's best avoided when connected to a network. Using outdated or insecure operating systems made WannaCry particularly damaging, and they also help attackers exploit devices after infection, especially when connecting to new networks. Even beyond viruses, these vulnerabilities can lead to remote control, data theft, and spreading malware. Antivirus software cannot repair flaws in the operating system itself.

Using third-party antivirus doesn't resolve the underlying security problems in the operating system.

WannaCry wasn't a targeted attack and look how much damage it did. It spread through an exploit in the OS that wasn't patched on Windows XP due to it being EoL and spread on its own without any action required from the user or the attacker. Even considering targeted/semi-targeted attacks, less of a concern is not no concern at all. The amount of issues caused by people using insecure operating systems during the WannaCry spread should make it clear to everyone why it's a bad idea to use Windows 7 over a year after security updates stopped. OP should switch to 8, 8.1, 10 or Linux, there's no valid reason to use Windows 7 anymore.

If it applies, you might consider 8 or 8.1 or a Linux distribution such as Ubuntu, which would probably work better than Windows 7. I firmly believe no one should run Windows 7 without ESU licensing.
