Considering your situation, it might not be necessary to upgrade. You already have good audio quality and use reliable software like Exact Audio Copy. While Linux alternatives exist, they don’t always match the performance you need for DVDs or streaming. Unless your computer requirements change, sticking with Windows 10 seems fine.

Visit university resources or connect with someone from a .edu email to access Windows keys through the school catalog or Dreamspark. Ubuntu includes VLC IIRC. For Ubuntu, mastering the command line is recommended.

Do you have Windows 7 or 8? You won't need to purchase ten of them.

For future reference: if you're working on surveillance, Ubuntu isn't the best choice. And actually, Wine performs reasonably well. My main problem with Linux right now is dealing with audio drivers.

I’m out of school now and have some experience with VLC, though the video quality isn’t ideal for me. I’m using a Windows 7 laptop that’s about seven years old, and I’ll be setting up a new desktop to replace it. That means I’ll need a separate Windows license for the new system.

You don't necessarily have to attend college if you can use a .edu email.

Ubuntu is acceptable; it performs adequately. Run a test installation and verify all drivers function—this is why I revert often after days of troubleshooting, especially when faced with superior Linux communities. Still, I struggle to play music, so I depend more on Windows tools. Windows 10 seems more reliable with better support. If that matters to you, invest in the $120 and choose Windows.

It's mostly about putting in the work to understand topics you might not really need or find useful. Privacy isn't a priority for an OS unless you're planning some questionable activities online. Those who are focused on Windows 10 privacy often lack sufficient knowledge about it. Edit: OEM Windows 10 keys can be obtained cheaply on Reddit or kinguin, though I think it's just a one-time purchase, similar to your laptop key.

Thank you for the idea. I'll look into it. At 30, I probably can't recall the login details anymore, but I appreciate the tip.
