You're evaluating your current Dell workstation setup and weighing options for improvement. The machine features an E5-1650v2 processor with 6 cores, 32GB RAM, and a Quadro M2000 GPU. While the GPU isn't considered critical right now, you're considering overclocking it to boost performance. You've explored several paths: upgrading components, swapping parts, or replacing the entire system. The X79 motherboard options on eBay are popular choices, along with spare parts like low-end graphics cards and DDR3 RAM. You're weighing selling the existing unit—removing the unlocked chip and enhancing RAM—against purchasing a newer model. A potential deal could be found for £200, offering a better build with a swapped-in processor. Alternatively, you might opt for an R5 2600 and a B450 board with DDR4 RAM, though performance gains are uncertain. Each route has its pros and cons, and the decision hinges on your priorities: cost, upgrade potential, or immediate functionality.

You can boost performance using throttle stops. Voltage will impose limits, but you might be able to adjust the voltage manually like with an LGA 775 chip. Check the datasheet first and look at the pin configuration. Consider newer models such as X79 and X99 for better reliability, or go with AMD EPYC or Ryzen for optimal results.

Sure, I've already adjusted the power limit to 130W and reset the clocks accordingly.

Consider this short tutorial on TDP limits to maximize your CPU performance. Download throttling, activate the power button, navigate to the tpl menu, adjust turbo long, short, and pp0 settings to 99999, and drag the sliders fully to the right. Secure the settings, lock them in, apply changes, and note that the Chinese X79 also has power limits—you can modify BIOS to unlock them.
