Hi, I'm helping you change the hard drive in your laptop. You started with Windows 8 but upgraded to Windows 10 during a free upgrade period. You're wondering if you should reinstall Windows 8 and let your motherboard check your license, or if you can download the Windows 10 installation tool. You prefer Windows 10 over 8 and don't want to spend time creating an installation tool if you don’t have a key. I need to know which version of Windows you’ll be installing and whether you can get back to Windows 8 or are stuck with 8. Please clarify your question so I can assist you better!

The Windows 8 license will function alongside Windows 10, allowing you to install Windows 10 if needed.

You can use the official Windows 10 USB drive from Microsoft for installation. There’s no hidden key preventing access to your other computer. Just ensure you’re using the correct version and follow the installation steps.

Ensure the laptop supports Win 10 drivers before proceeding; otherwise, consider using Windows 7 and avoid Windows 8.

I didn't encounter issues with Vista, yet I prefer avoiding Windows 8 in the future.
