Either XP or Linux...it's not worth it to switch to something else honestly.

XP is extremely old and contains many unpatched vulnerabilities. It’s really outdated, and the number of hidden backdoors remains high. I’ve already emphasized how bad it is. The safest choice is using a Linux OS, especially Ubuntu, which is straightforward to manage.

Propose releasing Windows without paying fees, opting for Linux distributions such as Ubuntu or Elementary OS.

Consider a lighter Linux distribution such as Lubuntu rather than Ubuntu. Linux Mint paired with XFCE works well. Alternatively, vanilla Debian offers a lightweight option.

Linux is likely the top choice, though alternatives exist if you must use Windows. If you manage to obtain Windows Vista Starter or 7 Starter editions, they perform well on older or less powerful systems. Both options will require slightly more resources than XP, but they’re worth exploring. For your situation, I’d recommend installing each OS you’re evaluating and testing it before deciding.

I mentioned XP since he asked about the version of Windows to install, and I said it would work well with his older hardware. I also brought up Linux, though I didn’t suggest a specific distribution.
