I possess an older Dell Inspiron 1525 but it runs extremely slow. I’m considering swapping its 5400hdd for an SSD to boost internet performance—this change is completely reversible. Which Windows version would suit it best? XP, Vista, or something else? It currently has 2GB of RAM.

It varies based on the processor as well. I owned one with a single-core Celeron chip, and you can replace it with a Core 2 Duo instead without much trouble. Adding a dual-core CPU together with an SSD will make it functional enough to run Windows 10.

I also owned one. I upgraded it myself many years back. Most Core 2 Duo models from that time came with a socketed CPU, except for the ULV models.

Bunsenlabs/Crunchbang Linux is my top choice for older laptops. You might also want to explore Ubuntu, though I think the Gnome DE won't perform very well. I also really enjoy ChromeOS and you could try the Neverware Cloudready installer.
