I chose between two 2B550M boards: MSI B550M Pro VDH-WIFI or Gigabyte B550M AORUS Elite Ax. After watching the hardware unboxed review video where the tester checked VRM temperatures for both models, it seemed the MSI version ran cooler than the Gigabyte one.

MSI B550M features a thicker copper PCB and improved thermal pads. MSI was among the first to use thick copper before others, and later, Gigabyte adopted it on AMD boards in the AM5 (B650) lineup. This approach works well. For an AM4 model of the B550M, MSI Pro VDH stands out as a cooler option, even without a heatsink, while GIGABYTE Aorus Elite looks stylish thanks to its copper design.

You're referring to a high number of PCB layers? That doesn't really impact the MSI B550M though, since they struggle with pushing past 4000 despite its capabilities. With gigabyte, this model performs well, especially on DDR4 6200+ and most boards handle over DDR4 5000. This generation seems to focus more on meeting specs rather than relying on vague metrics. Beyond tuning, the main things to check are VRM strength and available I/O. For the processor, it's better to opt for a newer or refurbished B450 instead of sticking with the B550. The real advantage of AM4 lies in its affordability when sourced from used 5600s to new or refurbished B450s. If you value durability, upgrading to AM5 would be a smarter choice.

Nah, I don’t have much budget for an AM5 build. I’m planning it for the long run, so upgrades won’t be an issue—just more RAM and an SSD. I need a B550 instead of a B450 because of the PCIe 4.0 support. Should I go with Gigabyte or MSI? I’ve already got DDR4 RAM, an SSD, and a PSU; my GPU is in rough shape and I’ll replace it later.

PCIe4 offers no real benefit and won’t significantly affect a 4090 or a lower-end GPU. Unless you’re foolish enough to opt for a 6500x with only four lanes, it’s not worth the effort.

I purchased an Arc A750, which is the main reason. Meanwhile, the B550 is available at a reasonable price in my country—definitely not bad.

Checking for additional B550 models, especially budget options. Comparing availability with Gigabyte Aorus boards and identifying your location.

Both options work well, but if you're aiming for maximum performance, MSI is a solid pick. For those who enjoy fine-tuning BIOS settings, GIGABYTE could be a better fit. If you're a hobbyist and want precise adjustments, stick with Ryzen 5900X or 5950X—regular use won't reach their full potential unless you're doing overclocking or testing extreme scenarios.
