TLDR: AM4 fits if you can't afford AM5, while AM5 works best for staying on the same platform longer. You could start with an integrated GPU in AM5 and upgrade later if you can. I think that’s my take, but both paths are possible. With AM4 you’re stuck on a limited setup, which is something to weigh carefully. P.S. Consider going Intel if you want more options.

That's a solid concept. Initially I considered an APU paired with a Radeon 780M graphics card. As someone who enjoys building setups, I'd really like to own a 780M desktop APU and experiment with it. However, I don't believe a 780M configuration is worth the investment anymore—since a 780M GPU typically costs around $100. Moving up to 1700 offers a more affordable platform while still being appealing with a GPU. Updated the original post. Changed on September 26, 2023 by Deathcorner

Sure, for Intel or AMD it really doesn't matter much, you just need to do the calculations when you're ready to make a decision. Personally, I've found Intel to be a loss, my most recent one was a Pentium 1 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I really lean toward AM5 since each new title release appears to increase demand for CPU power while also being demanding on the GPU. I’ve trimmed down the list you shared if you’re open to making some adjustments. You can further reduce it even more by choosing a Ryzen 5 7500F from AliExpress—it’s around $150 USD, which is much lower than the market price and should provide space for a better graphics card. Optimizing the 7500F will boost performance to about 7600x, with the biggest gains coming from sufficient RAM. Recent BIOS updates support any single-chip Zen 4 CPU (like the 6400) running at full speed without issues; clocks might vary slightly, but 2133 should be achievable on over 90% of units.

I discovered this video which clearly demonstrates that a 12400 could be a good option for me. It compares it to a 7700x and only gets slow when paired with a costly card. Probably means I shouldn't invest right now. We'll check later.
