I've tried both, but it's hard to pick one. Windows 8.1 is quick and responsive, though the tiles and home screen can feel a bit bothersome now. Windows 7 remains simple and familiar, with a handy start menu that appears instantly. Switching to Windows 8 requires installing many apps to match 7's feel. Performance-wise, Windows 8.1 is about 0.5% faster in games—sometimes hitting 31 or 32 FPS versus 30 on 7. I value speed, security, and efficiency, but I'm still unsure which suits me best.

I'd suggest using version 8.1. You can bypass the tile interface by starting directly in desktop mode.

Similar to gaming performance, they are quite impressive. How you use them has a bigger impact on their security than the operating system between 7 and 8.1. You can remove the tiles in 8.1 using a custom UI. Also, it's around 5% instead of 0.5% if you're getting 31-32 FPS compared to 30.

The cheapest option depends on your plan. 10 is free for 7 and 8.1 users, so if you qualify, you save money. Otherwise, compare other plans for better value.
