Based on your budget, I’d suggest 5800x3d or 12400f. If performance isn’t critical, go with 12900k. With undervoltage settings, it uses around 400w, and it has a low power profile for all my CPUs in BIOS until I actually need more power (95w on my 9900k and 135w on the 5950x).

The discussion focuses on practical constraints rather than expenses. The actual budget plays a significant role in determining which components are considered.

I didn’t realize I was just grabbing random items, thinking it would stay under 5.5K.

For gaming purposes only, I recommend 5800X3D as well. It offers better power efficiency and provides a noticeable boost for gaming performance through the 3D-cashe. However, outside of gaming, it runs slower than the 5800X due to its lower clock speed. The 5950X is far too powerful for pure gaming and would be an unnecessary expense compared to the benefits of 5800X3D. If you perform other tasks, the 5950X might be more suitable. Also, keep in mind that AMD is planning Zen 4 and Intel is releasing Raptor Lake 13th Gen CPUs soon. It could be wise to wait for those releases, as older models from AMD and Intel may become more affordable or you can access the latest technology. Just a quick tip.

Yeah, don't do that unless you want a GTS 450 that looks like a 3090. Don't know if op wants a 5800X3D or 12700K, but here's a list I made with the 12700K. The 12700K's gaming performance is very close to that of the 5800X3D and performs like a 5900X outside of gaming. If you want a 5800X3D, simply change the motherboard and CPU . You could get a cheaper PSU if you want, but this one should last a while and could be carried to a future system (though this system will probably last as long as the PSU). PCPartPicker Part List CPU: Intel Core i7-12700K 3.6 GHz 12-Core Processor ($349.99 @ Best Buy) CPU Cooler: EK EK-AIO Basic 77 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler ($96.99 @ Amazon) Motherboard: Gigabyte Z690 AORUS ELITE AX DDR4 ATX LGA1700 Motherboard ($179.99 @ Amazon) Memory: TEAMGROUP T-FORCE VULCAN Z 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 Memory ($79.99 @ Newegg) Storage: Western Digital Blue SN570 2 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive ($159.99 @ Amazon) Video Card: MSI GeForce RTX 3090 Ti 24 GB SUPRIM X Video Card ($1499.00 @ Newegg) Case: Corsair 4000D Airflow ATX Mid Tower Case ($94.99 @ Amazon) Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA P6 1000 W 80+ Platinum Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply ($169.99 @ EVGA) Total: $2630.93 Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available
