Choose between the 8GB and 12GB models of RTX 3060.
In various titles such as Alan Wake 2, system specs mention an RTX 3060. Which model is correct—12 GB or 8 GB? The 12 GB version offers more power, but the 8 GB model performs worse than a 2060 Super due to VRAM bandwidth and memory bus limitations. Decide based on your needs.
i wasn't aware they had an 8gb model. however, you should verify your VRAM usage—if it's not excessive—and avoid lag spikes caused by that specific model. in the long run, a 12gb card is likely more future-proof for RAM demands, though performance gains are minimal. the 3060 works but isn't outstanding. if you're aiming for a slight upgrade, the 3070/3070ti is the only Nvidia option in that range. unless you're in the 40-series, it's not worth the investment. buying used can be beneficial if you find a good deal, but if budget is tight, an 8gb would suffice. 12gb would be a better choice later on, especially if you can locate a decently used unit. past low-end variants differ significantly in quality. for casual gaming, 8gb is adequate, but 12gb offers better long-term value.
give up dlss give up video upscaling as for the OP don't buy a 3060 ive had mine for 2 years and its beginning to show its age. I can no longer do anything in 4k all low at above 30fps. if you have a big backlog of older titles its primo go for it, but if this is all the money you have wait save some more.
Didn't realize an 8 gig version existed. Your mention of budget didn't affect the appeal of 12 gigs—it's clear even on a tighter budget, 12 remains a smart choice. If you're on a tighter budget, AMD still offers better value.
Unless stated otherwise, consider the RTX 3060 with 12GB as the intended model, since the 8GB variant didn’t exist before. Before that release, no specifications were necessary, so no titles were affected. For newer releases post-8GB, assume the 12GB version is what’s meant, as it’s the more typical choice.
