You're considering a few different CPU options for your new PC build. Right now you're leaning toward the Ryzen 9 9950X or Core Ultra 9 285K, but you're open to exploring other choices that could suit your needs better. Your main focus is on gaming titles like Fortnite, Star Citizen, Rainbow, and Valorant, as well as productivity software such as Ansys, SolidWorks, Photoshop, and Lightroom. You're also looking at a build with an Asus ROG Strix motherboard, Corsair Vengeance RGB 32GB DDR5 RAM, and an RTX 5080 GPU when it becomes available. Your budget is around $600 to $650 USD, which gives you some flexibility.

For efficiency and gaming, I’d wait for 9950x3D, though you might consider 9800x3D based on your productivity requirements.

These tools are primarily for professional use, though some may be used for personal projects. Payment details vary by service, but pricing can be a consideration. Performance tends to favor paid options, especially for tasks like 285k, where alternatives lag. RAM upgrades are recommended for better results. AMD hasn’t proven reliable for everyday use, and alternatives like 9800x3D or 9950x offer more capability.

You could also think about 7700/7700x/9700x since the numbers you mentioned don’t really reflect a setup with 16 cores, unless you intend to run two heavy apps at the same time

I work with Ansys and SolidWorks for school projects on rocket parts. For instance, I analyze a 400-pound hopper airframe using Ansys. For my hobby, I rely on Photoshop and Lightroom. My funds come from a budget I’m managing for these components.

Star Citizen enjoys 3D v-cache CPUs a lot. Most enthusiasts who really care go for the 5/7/9800X3D right now since they’re currently the top choice for that game.

Observed Star Citizen performance improving more with higher clock speeds than with cache enhancements.
