Hello Everyone, I'm setting up a build to host all my VMs at home. I'm currently using a free Google Cloud subscription and have a 4-core laptop for smaller lab work. I run multiple VMs—at least one per VM, sometimes two for larger firewalls. I'm trying to decide between a 7-core 2700X or the latest Ryzen 5 3600X.

For running multiple virtual machines, a greater number of cores usually performs better than having many fast cores. If you don’t expect to add more VMs and prefer quicker VM speeds or better single-thread performance, consider the R5 3600x. The choice is yours.

If the 2700X is more affordable, I’d choose that path for VMs. Everything else will work just fine, and it should also handle gaming well.

The 2700X performs more efficiently in virtual machines because it has a higher core count.
