In early 2022 I bought a system with a Ryzen 3700X and an RTX 3070. The 3700X had performance issues in demanding games like Cyberpunk and Warzone. I’m considering upgrading to the Ryzen 5800X3D and want to know if it would improve performance over the 5800X with an RTX 3070. My motherboard is an Asus Prime Q460, I have 16GB of 3200MHz RAM.

Yes. Most improvements will stem from upgrading to ZEN 3. A simple switch should boost FPS by 10 to 25, depending on the game. The 5800X3D is ideal if you can afford it; the 5600X3D works too. The regular model is fine but depends on your budget. Prices will rise soon as stock runs low. Buy soon before it’s too late.

5800x3d is certainly quicker than 5800x, yet it's significantly pricier and doesn't support overclocking.

This model shines for gaming and workstations. Expect roughly a 15% boost at 1080P, 10% at 1440P, and 5-7% at 4K on the 5800X3D when the CPU is the limiting factor. The trade-off is that heavy cache usage can cut performance by about 5-7%, depending on the software. I’d pick the 5800X (at its listed price in the US). A modest extra 15% gain doesn’t justify the significant price hike.

Compared to the 13th gen and Ryzen 7000, the 5800X3D often performs similarly or slightly better. There are some YouTube videos that highlight its comparison with both the 13th gen and Ryzen 7000 in gaming scenarios.

Just playing games means X3D is the way to go. Doing other things makes it hard to decide. 5800X can reach 5050MHz with PBO, while X3D operates at 4450MHz. I run at 60FPS, so any of my Zen 3 components works fine for me. I own a 5600X, X3D, and a 5900X. X3D isn’t exciting to tune because it makes your setup feel like a Dell rig.

To focus on the distinction between the two, I limited the discussion to AMD’s 5000 series.

Yes, the 13th gen and 7000 destroy Ryzen 5000 would likely be a strong choice for gaming. The 5800X3D could match or surpass them, making it a solid option if it keeps up with a 12600K.

The 3700x seems to be the limiting factor. Buddy pairs well with his 3080 and enjoys it. What RAM capacity are you considering? A single stick? Two sticks? The 3700x works fine, but it might not be the main problem. If it's still an issue, then I'm in line with others. 5800x3d.

I’d prefer the 5900x at 5900x instead. It’s more affordable than the 5800X3d and performs much better for tasks beyond gaming. The games that the 5800X3d beats are mostly older titles. From what I remember, newer games with scalable cores show the 5900X to be a stronger option. If you’re playing graphics-heavy games or at higher resolutions where your GPU is limited, you won’t notice much difference. With an RTX 3070, even at 1440p, the 5800X3d doesn’t offer much advantage. It wasn’t recommended when it launched for the same reasons I just mentioned. Now it’s gaining attention mainly because the Ryzen 7000 is costly and didn’t meet expectations. So suddenly, the 5800X3d looks more appealing by comparison. The 5900X was the better pick six months ago, and everyone on the internet—including this forum—agreed, and it still stands out today.
