Choose between Ryzen 5 2600X and Intel i5 10400F for optimal performance.
Hi, I'm checking if the Ryzen 2600X works well with an RTX 2060 or an i5 10400F. I see options for a stock cooler on the 2600X for around £65 or no cooler for the i5 at £78. While the i5 has stronger single-core performance, upgrading the Ryzen could be just as good and offers more flexibility since you might upgrade later. The other choice is keeping the E3 1241V3, but I’d appreciate some thoughts on that too!
It might be worth looking for a refurbished 5600G instead. There are superior options like the Ryzen 5500 and 5600 that offer better performance without much extra cost. Consider saving a bit of money, and remember that AMD often has affordable used B3/450 models available.
The B350 and B450 are essentially the same vehicle, just with different naming conventions. They refer to the same platform and features, so there isn't a significant difference between them.
you could definitely use a 5800x3D on a b350 board (it mainly depends on the power supply). it’s true the early bios were poor, just like the b450s... most issues should be fixed now, which is why i’d choose intel. if you’re mainly gaming, single-core speed still counts more. ryan zen generally struggles with overclocking, and gains are small—objectively the biggest gap compared to intel. i don’t mind much about overclocking (makes sense for weaker chips), and both my graphics card and cpu are underclocked for better temps and performance.
10400 seems to outshine a 2600. When they were in the spotlight, the 10400 and Ryzen 3600 were seen as a tight matchup, but the 3600 provided a noticeable performance edge over the 2600. The key point is that the Ryzen processor is more affordable, while the Intel option requires a cooler from another source (though Intel’s own coolers are essentially free). How do the prices stack up for compatible motherboards between the two? As you noted, taking the Ryzen path also opens up better upgrade options—future you could easily add a 5800X3D and surpass any 10th or 11th-gen Intel setup.
