I'm evaluating a replacement for my current Comcast router. I'm considering the Netgear Nighthawk X10 and X6. Should I invest an extra $100 for the X10, which supports 802.11AD and is newer by about two years? Your thoughts?

Router technology has become increasingly quirky over time. Why would anyone pay an extra $100 for the X10 model?

The numbers add up straightforwardly. Each $25 brings you one "X", and with four groups of that, you end up with extra "X"s. It’s not a complicated problem once you see it.

It supports wireless AD and is three years updated. I’m uncertain if the extra $100 is justified, which is why I’m inquiring.

Yeah, wireless AD isn't useful when you're not in the same space, and if you are, just run a cable. I wouldn't use the X6 myself. What's your router doing now that you're thinking about upgrading?

It's the low-quality model from Comcast. (I’d pay for it but need their gigabit connection.) Plus, why skip the X6?

The R6700 Nighthawk offers significant improvements over its predecessor and frequently comes with discounts under $100.

Comcast doesn't sell routers directly; they provide gateways instead. If you want to cut the $11-$13 monthly fee, you'll need a cable modem too. The 802.11AD standard won't gain traction, so it's better to opt for a regular AC router or keep an eye on future upgrades like 802.11AC and Wi-Fi 6.
