MINT. Mint is significantly lighter for an older laptop. To set it up, visit mints site, download the ISO, use a USB stick, and install it there. If you have files still on the old machine, insert the drive and restart. After logging in, mint will provide guidance for installation.

You may test both options without installing through the LiveCD or whatever method it uses. Just try them both and decide which one suits you better, then install the preferred one.
