I understand both companies likely have strong advantages that keep them top choices. But sometimes one stands out in a specific area. If you need a £200 CPU for gaming and school work, which option would suit better—£500 for gaming and demanding software like Adobe Premiere?

Seek a 13700(f) matching Ryzen 7700(x) costs then opt for Intel when you locate a Ryzen 7900(x) at similar pricing. Amd depends on overall budget and intended purpose; Ryzen 5500 and 12600k(f) suit low budgets, while 13600k(f), 13700(f), 7700(x), 7900(x) cover most other scenarios.
