Both options are available for purchase on Steam, but you're looking for a single choice. Which one are you considering?

Fallout 3 has more to do but i like Fallout New Vegas, however both are amazing in my opinion. The old western and welcoming feel of fallout new vegas and the dark lonely feel of fallout 3. Your choice but i would try to get both. Edited October 24, 2015 by Made In Canada

New Vegas offered a more enjoyable experience, and I’m confident Fallout 4 will feature iron sights instead of the ones in Fallout 3.

Initially you won't be able to understand this. First of all, it's only comparable because the map is more open than in New Vegas, though we're not entirely sure. (And the family angle is still uncertain, but that's a big guess). Edited October 24, 2015 by Made In Canada

Fallout 3 offers a more captivating world. NV feels refined, yet it lacks the advanced threats found in FO3. FO3 includes Supermutants as enemies, which NV doesn't have. That difference could be a solid reason.

I gave a shot to New Vegas and enjoyed it, so I bought three too. Now I own both.

Run New Vegas and Fallout 3 using the Tale of Two Wastelands mod. Stabilize New Vegas with a 4GB launcher. Play both sequentially.
