The additional cores in the 2600 would certainly be beneficial. The i3 performs better for gaming, while the R5 excels in most other tasks and should handle a 980 without issues.
I understand the R5 can handle gaming well. I used it in my primary setup before upgrading, and it consistently performed reliably. I wasn't certain whether the newer Intel processor would offer better performance overall.
