Choose between AMD 5800X and Intel 13400 for your system.
Facing a decision between AMD and Intel since their prices are similar here. I'm planning a build for gaming, video editing, and music production—use cases that cover both casual and more demanding tasks. Any thoughts on which might be better?
both options work well, so choose wisely which apps you use with your gaming setup. if you're building a full gaming PC with room to explore other tasks, the 5800X3D remains a strong pick. AM4 is nearing its end of life, and DDR5 still offers good value despite price changes. Right now, Intel provides more diverse hardware choices. The 5800X3D leans toward gaming, while the Intel 13400 stands out as an excellent all-round CPU—see a detailed analysis here: https://www.techpowerup.com/review/intel...0f/26.html
Check the 5700x version too. It's still an 8-core unit, saving some money compared to the 5800x. My model runs at 4.7ghz with all cores active, so the performance gap isn't noticeable.
The boards are priced in a similar way too. Perhaps these options will help determine the best choice. Gaming works just as well either way. Clarify your thoughts, since this seems confusing to me. Choosing an older model to save money is totally acceptable!
I don't feel the need to justify my choices. Spending on an outdated setup isn't sensible, especially when a better option exists. With a 5800X, a suitable cooler and a motherboard offering solid VRM, you're getting similar performance to upgrading to a modern platform like Intel LGA1700 with a 12th/13th gen CPU or a low-end AM5 board—still more capable than older AM4. A budget AM4 build makes sense. Upgrading an old AM4 with a newer AM4 processor such as Zen3 5600, 5700X or 5800X3D is logical. Creating a new AM4 system using mid-range parts from previous generations is not advisable.
