i'm planning a 3080 build and need 32gb of memory. I'm deciding between two options: 4x 8gb sticks or 2x 16gb sticks. The latter is more affordable at my place, so I'd prefer the 2x8 kit. My RAM will be Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 3200mhz CL16, and I'm using an ASRock ATX B550 Steel Legend with a Ryzen 5600x. No specific OC goals, just aiming for stability.
2*8 at 3200cl16 will perform better, especially with single-rank 16GB modules. However, you’ll be restricted to a maximum of 32GB until you upgrade, which should still cover gaming needs for a long time ahead.
I upgraded to a 4x8GB setup since it’s going to take some time before a 32GB model appears and Ryzen handles better with that configuration. Only three titles have used more than 16GB: Far Cry 5, FS2020, and DCS AMD Ryzen: 4 vs. 2 Sticks on R5 5600X for up to 10% faster performance. YouTube
Ryzen offers higher performance through multiple memory ranks rather than more sticks. Many 16GB modules are actually dual-rank, so choosing two dual-rank 16GB sticks would be equivalent to four single-rank 8GB sticks. Fewer sticks reduce stress on the IMC, which might allow better overclocking and tighter timings. On the flip side, a configuration of four 8GB sticks could be more cost-effective or let you upgrade faster memory for the same budget as two 16GB sticks. It really depends on your priorities. I’d likely go with two 16GB unless budget is a constraint.
