Hey there, welcome back! I’m new here and excited to hear your thoughts. With all the new CPU releases lately, it’s tough to decide what to upgrade. I’m planning a CPU, RAM, and motherboard upgrade. I’ve been using an Intel i7 5820 at 4.2GHz, 16GB G-series RAM with average speeds, and the ASUS Rampage V. I was originally planning to go with the 5960x for a smooth platform change... but after checking prices, thermal efficiency, and value, I’m starting to question it.

My priorities are speed and getting good performance for my tasks—like launching apps and running research software. I do some light work with MS Word, editing, and basic data analysis. I’m also interested in 3D modeling and flow simulations. I’ve looked at the 3950x and think it’s a solid choice, especially for its power efficiency and thermal performance. Pairing it with the Gigabyte Aorus Xtreme sounds appealing.

But I’m not sure about jumping from a high-end platform to a mainstream one, especially with things like quad-channel RAM support. The 3950x seems to offer great power without the high heat, which fits my needs better. What do you think? Any suggestions or insights? Thanks a lot!

Do you often require more than 128GB of RAM and several NVMe SSDs? Then consider a Threadripper. Alternatively, you might opt for my 1950X model.

Skylake-X offers a refreshed version. I admit it’s a bit competitive now. A platform price of 1300$ includes the 10980XE and X299 Aorus Master (350$) versus 1100$ for the 3950X and X570 Master (350$). You spend an extra 200$, but get more DDR4 channels, additional PCIe lanes, and better performance than the Zen 2 TR. It’s more affordable for RAM and NVMe needs, especially compared to the Zen 1+ TR, with improved performance at 2970WX and 2990WX.

The NVMe impact is unclear. The Aorus Xtreme (X570) can handle multiple NVMe drives, but confirming at least two requires checking the specifications.
