It's beneficial to opt for 1440p resolution. Ensure you use an IPS panel and the highest possible refresh rate you can afford. My setup includes a 60Hz 1440p IPS display that has been optimized to 75Hz for additional frames.

If you prioritize screen space then 1080p should suffice. A drawback of 1440p is the need for greater processing power to run the games you enjoy, which often requires investing in better components and purchasing a higher-resolution monitor. Although there are affordable 1440p options, most are limited to 60Hz and TN panels. In my opinion, if I were to choose a 1440p display, I'd opt for an IPS model, 144Hz refresh rate, and G-Sync from a trusted manufacturer—though these options tend to be more expensive.

I've tried both options, and my setup is a 1440p at 144Hz monitor. It greatly improves the desktop experience, browsing, and documents. Gaming isn't that noticeable. For a 27-inch screen, the PPI isn't much higher than 1080p, but it does help with smaller displays. I'd choose 1080p at 144Hz over 1440p at 60Hz.

You'd likely find it unnecessary given your setup. Your 120Hz monitor meets your needs, and you prioritize smooth gameplay over resolution differences. Graphics aren't a priority for you either.

I was planning to share something but he delivered perfectly. My setup is a 165Hz 1440p monitor with a GTX 1080, previously using a 180p 144Hz model with a 770. The improvement is subtle but noticeable. You'll notice better PPI at 27 inches and clearer distant objects. It remains functional on Windows Desktop compared to 4K. Conclusion: If you can afford it and want the best, opt for 1440p. Avoid skipping the 144Hz unless you never play FPS games or don’t intend to.

Choose a 1080p display at 144Hz with the GTX 1060, rather than a 1440p at 60Hz using the GTX 1070.

Consider 1070 and 1080p144 for better value. If budget allows, go for 144hz. Otherwise, you’ll have a solid 144hz display now, and a stronger GPU will come in later when the 1060 faces performance issues.

Sure, just make sure you pick the 27" display. Anything under that works too; 1080p is perfectly acceptable. I moved from a 24" 1080p TN monitor at 60Hz to a 27" IPS with 144Hz and G-Sync, which makes a noticeable change.
