I haven't really tried any of these games, but Black Flag stands out the most. The naval fights seem exciting and from what I've heard it's the only one where you can invest in something genuinely engaging (your vessel and crew). The overall narrative through the series feels quite chaotic.
I really enjoyed Black Flag. It remains one of the top games I've played in recent years.
Freedom Cry offers a solid experience for trying out the AC titles. It shares many similarities with the rest of the series, runs smoothly, and is quite compact to finish. It should help you decide if you enjoy the entire AC lineup.
I've experienced every entry in the Assassin's Creed series, and I believe Assassin's Creed 2 would be a great place to begin. The initial titles felt quite monotonous and seemed incomplete. This game truly excels, with outstanding mechanics, immersive settings, and a compelling story. Brotherhood is strong, though Revelations falls short in comparison. I found IV and Rogue particularly satisfying, especially the naval features. Unity showed real promise, delivering a beautifully crafted city and polished systems. Its improved gameplay, especially the enhanced movement, would have made it my top pick. The co-op mode was a nice addition, but I haven't had the chance to test it yet. If performance issues were resolved, Unity could easily be my favorite in the franchise. Overall, I'm passionate about the series and look forward to seeing more of its potential.
