I want to play AC but don’t know where to begin. I saw an article mentioning AC2, but it’s quite old. So I’m considering starting with AC IV. What makes AC IV different from the others?
In my view, the first AC stands out as the best. It's followed by 2 and Brotherhood. There really isn't much history that feels outdated—everyone plays mostly the same, and the graphics have been impressive from the start. I’d recommend beginning with the very first title. There’s a lot of background and story that becomes confusing if you jump later in the series. The initial game established the benchmark, the second enhanced gameplay significantly and added a beloved character, Brotherhood brought some interesting twists, Revelations offered some value, AC3 was decent but Connor’s presence is a bit of a letdown, AC4 impressed me, Rogue is a bit confusing and mostly just a copy of AC4 with some features removed, Unity had issues (still unsure), and Syndicate remains unknown since it hasn’t been released yet.
AC was quite disappointing and seems outdated at the moment. AC2 stood out positively. I haven’t tried any of the others. The earlier titles aren’t crucial to the narrative; they always take place in a different era with only a slight connection, so I can give you a brief two-line overview of the first game and you’ll understand what’s happening.
It doesn't matter. I can condense any narrative for any game, but missing the full context won't capture the essence. Plus, hearing about something from another person only offers their perspective, which may not be accurate. Of course, someone who isn't interested in paying attention won't see the whole picture. And those who never play the games will know even less. In short, I'm highlighting that you probably aren't ready to offer advice on a series you haven't experienced.
I suggest giving the first option a shot. The story isn't designed for backward navigation because important elements disappear as you go further into the past. If you explore the newer versions and later decide to revisit earlier parts, be ready. At least familiarize yourself with the background of the older entries beforehand, otherwise you might miss key plot points.
