Could consider adapting it for a Minecraft server. I don’t have a Windows copy to install on it.
Verify the Ask Ubuntu URL, as you mentioned it should launch the menu. Also confirm you installed it on the hard drive, not the flash drive (unlike previous attempts).
You can obtain an evaluation copy of any Windows version and use "slmgr -rearm" in the command prompt up to six times every 180 days. This will maintain an evaluation edition for approximately three years. Your Minecraft server also functions properly on Windows.
I run Ubuntu 14.04 on the desktop. It functions well after a small fix during startup (added "nomodeset" to Grub’s boot line). My system has an AMD A4-5300 with 8GB RAM and no dedicated GPU—just the APU handling everything. Storage setup includes 8 HDD, 1 SSD, 1 Blu-Ray, and 1 DVD. Mostly use it as a Samba server for shared files (movies, music, etc.), and I also connect remotely via TeamViewer. Their installation guides worked perfectly for me.
Notes:
- On boot, a blank screen appears similar to the "nomodeset" workaround I tried.
- Steps to fix: hold Left Shift until GRUB menu, press 'e' to edit boot command, find "Linux..." options, add "nomodeset" at the end, then press F10.
- After login, install the graphics driver or find open-source alternatives.
Alternatively, you might obtain a license from /r/softwareswap for around ten dollars.
yeah but that would most likely be a illegal copy! If your going to get a dodgy copy just go and torrent it! (also if you are a student check if you have a dreamspark account because then its a lovely free copy of windows 8 full! along with Windows Server 2012 DataCentre)

You successfully secured the key, even though the person above me had a point. It’s still a convenient and affordable way to get what you need.
