For better performance, consider Windows Server 2012. For a lighter option, Kubuntu is recommended. Note: The previous message mistakenly referred to something as "light."

Well, not really. I think you really have no other choice, other than a CLI OS. @ MG2R had a guide about a fileserver using Debian CLI.

You're asking about the purpose of using this home server. If it's only for file sharing, just install Windows and organize a few folders with proper access settings!

It seems Debian might not be compatible with Ubuntu, but I’ll give it a shot tomorrow. I double-checked WHS2011 and confirmed support through 2023. I’ll stick with it until Ubuntu is stable.
