I possess an outdated machine with 4GB RAM, a 240GB hard drive, a PCI sound card (identification uncertain), and an older CPU (either Core2Duo or Pentium). What operating system would be most suitable for configuring music playback via speakers? The challenge is minimizing the need to switch between applications each time you want to start or stop a song. You prefer a reliable system that allows direct control from a decent ATX case, ideally second-hand but unremarkable. I’ve searched Gumtree, eBay, Amazon, and other platforms but haven’t found a suitable case within your budget of £10-£15. Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thank you!

Yes, there are operating systems that let you manage playback from your device, so you can adjust the song without physically going to it.

OS doesn't handle that. The music player will manage it. You need a player that can work as an UPnP server or streamer. For Windows, an example is Foobar. Once streaming is set up, you can use another media player to connect the server and use it as a remote controller. Devices like phones, DVD players, smart TVs, or anything supporting UPnP can also be used.

Any operating system could work with your setup, but I recommend starting with Windows 10.

I put Windows 10 on my system, but it ran extremely slow and crashed when I tried to use Spotify.

there has been a minor adjustment; it was supposed to be 4GB, but now it’s only 1GB because I received faulty RAM and had to switch to another stick I had on hand.

Having two computers linked to the same Spotify account lets you stream music between them.

At the moment I'm considering, my computer is so slow it can't run Windows 10, and upgrading to Windows 7 would be expensive.

Consider using a Chromecast audio device paired with an app that works with it, such as Spotify. However, this approach also involves additional costs.
