Choose a suitable home switch based on your needs and electrical requirements.
Hello everyone, I'm looking for a recommendation on switching my home network. Mostly for gaming and streaming, like Netflix, and I need around 10 wired ports. My internet connection is poor, but I hope to get fiber-to-the-node soon. I'm considering the Nighthawk XR300 or 500—do these work with a switch that uses one port, or do they require a dedicated router port? Also, I'm thinking about installing a rack-mounted switch in my garage and want something reliable for the long term. Any advice would be appreciated!
For ten ports you need more than what a basic home router offers—they lack sufficient connections. (the model you referred to only provides four) Consider the Netgear ProSAFE 16-port switch for a budget-friendly yet solid choice, though any gigabit switch is usually sufficient for most households right now. Ten gigabits might be excessive for typical home use, but investing in it could pay off if you plan to expand later. Avoid using a router as a switch; instead, opt for a dedicated switch that handles the required function for a stable network.
