I recently started learning video editing and the output quality is only 720p. I assumed my gaming PC—built for performance with room for upgrades but starting on lower-end components—would handle it. However, rendering times are extremely slow. Here’s what I have: an i3 12100, 64GB RAM (some free), an ARC A750 WD BLACK 500GB NVME SSD, and a b660m ASUS TUF Gaming motherboard. I’m new to video editing and don’t know much about the process. While I recognize the need for a strong processor, I’m unsure if my setup is optimized or if there’s something I’ve misconfigured. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

What’s your preferred video editor? Most tools available tend to favor CUDA, making the A750 a limited option unless it handles openCL well. You might have considered the 3060 or 2080/2070 models instead for similar costs.

I’m working with Davinci Resolve. The issue started when I didn’t expect video editing with the ARC A750. I noticed my CPU would spike to 100% during just a brief scrub through the timeline, then jump to turbo speed right away.

Consider your current performance needs and the specific tasks you run; switching to an Nvidia GPU might be better if graphics-intensive work is a priority, while upgrading your CPU could help with overall processing speed.

I would start by improving the CPU. A stronger GPU will certainly boost performance over the a750, but you’ll struggle with anything below a Ryzen 3600 or better, no matter what GPU you choose. The devinci site suggests at least an i5/R5 and favors i7/R7 for the processor. What’s your budget looking like? I’d suggest a 12600 minimum, and if you can afford it plus a GPU, go all in.

I think I'll go with the i7 12700k since that's what I've been looking for. If I manage, I'd like the RTX 4070 Ti later, so I'm keeping an eye out for a GPU. Appreciate the advice!
