I’m looking to improve my home network. Right now I’m using budget switches that often fail, so I need better ones. I want a lot of ports and gigabit speed. I don’t want to spend too much, and I’m comfortable with used equipment—so an older model would be okay.

How many docks do you require? What is your financial limit?

D-Link GO Easy desktop switch in Gigabit speed, 16 RJ-45 ports (GO-SW-16G), 24 RJ-45 ports (GO-SW-24G). TP-Link TL-SG10 rack mount switch offers similar capability and even greater durability.

Be careful with top-tier gear—it usually needs active cooling, so keep it away from your sleeping area. I prefer Netgear switches; they consistently perform well and some last for life, like the Prosafe GS724T, which is currently available for €100.

They're generally similar in meaning, often just about choosing port count and desired style, or additional options like rack mounts when needed. If you're interested in features such as VLANs, you should consider the smart aspects first.

Locally acquiring 24 ports at 2960-x for around $20 to $30 is straightforward. Look on Craigslist; prices are reasonable for a gigabit switch. For an unmanaged setup, simply reset the configuration and proceed.
