I’m not sure which distribution you’re referring to, but it sounds like a lightweight Linux option that lets you mount your hard drive as a folder during boot from USB.

Any Linux distribution can handle this. I prefer Linux Mint since it matches my existing setup and what I've installed on over 50 systems. The installation typically occurs on an SSD, and I copy files to the new drive using a USB-to-SATA cable. If you plan to boot from a USB, you'll need to decide where to store the recovered data—perhaps another USB stick if the files are manageable.

I’m looking for a very light distribution. It’s running on an old Dell laptop with a Pentium M and just 512MB of RAM. I’m not sure if Antix is suitable, but I need something that won’t strain the system.

Also just trying to capture photos of your cousins' funeral, not a lot going on with the 16GB drive.

The frequent issue of posing questions without providing specifics. To obtain the images, I would remove the disk and perform the task on a reliable computer.

Generally, any distribution offering a live GUI can handle this. I usually use a Ventoy USB with Clonezilla, SystemRescueCD, and Fedora's Everything Installer, though I’m currently exploring Silverblue more.
