I’ll be setting up a guest or secondary system and choosing Kubuntu for KDE Plasma. It offers great personalization options. I’m also considering Manjaro with KDE—what’s the main difference? Will either affect Steam Proton or gaming performance?

I'm using Manjaro KDE currently and am really happy with it. For Kubuntu, I'm not sure, but I usually go for Arch-based systems. If you prefer Debian-based ones, that's totally fine too.

I’m just starting out with this only using Ubuntu, but I want a lot of personalization and some Steam Proton games.

Kubuntu is tailored for you, though it can feel more challenging to manage, particularly for someone just starting out.

KDE is a desktop environment similar to Gnome or XFCE. It remains largely the same no matter which operating system it's based on.

It's a bit more intricate, that's what I've heard.

You can run any KDE-based distribution on any system without issues. For customization, KDE offers more options compared to XFCE.

You're enjoying Kubuntu with Plasma on your work laptop, which is a big improvement. So far, your only previous Linux experience has been command-line server tasks, making this a smooth transition!

It's quite different. Starting from a basic Arch system is much simpler, but Manjaro streamlines everything so it feels almost as easy as using Debian or another distribution after proper installation.

Regarding the desktop environment, there will be minimal changes overall, though the core distribution will vary.
