Consider keeping your current files intact by backing them up. A clean install offers a fresh start, removing old settings and potential issues, which can improve performance and security. It’s often recommended for major updates to ensure stability.

A clean installation is always the optimal choice. It leaves no residual registry entries or temporary files behind, eliminating confusion about unknown files that even Windows might have forgotten. There’s no risk of deleting essential files or encountering issues from outdated drivers. Since Windows 10 doesn’t update the NTFS filesystem, a fresh install is wise—just make sure to back up your data first. This approach minimizes potential problems.

I don’t have files to back up, but I can suggest reliable methods. Using a trusted external hard drive and following proper backup procedures ensures your data is safe. Consider automated tools for consistency and peace of mind.

You really don't require the serial key at all. The serial number stays consistent across all Windows 10 systems, I think. After upgrading, my desktop and laptop shared the same serial code. Instead of providing the serial, Windows checks if you have a valid license by verifying the hardware connected to your machine. You still need to complete the upgrade to authenticate the hardware initially. Once you reach the Windows key screen, simply selecting 'skip' will let it validate automatically when you open Windows. These keys are intended for those who buy a brand-new Windows 10 installation—either because they have no operating system yet or haven't used Windows 7/8 and can't upgrade.
