It's time to upgrade
/ get a new system. It's my first desktop in 5-6 years, so I'm a bit behind on the right components these days.
I'll mainly use it for 4K gaming (mainly Battlefield & Sea of Thieves) and photo-/video editing.
I have everything sorted except the CPU, which I plan to pair with an RX 9070 XT GPU.
From what I understand, X3D models work best for gaming at 1080p and maybe 1440p? The issue is that I have a 4K monitor and want to run games in native 4K resolution.
And since I occasionally edit photos and movies, I'm not sure which CPU to choose.
I think a 9800X3D is the best option for gaming. But do CPUs generally have an edge in 1080p performance?
That's why I'm thinking about a 9900X (non-3D) to boost efficiency during editing and rely more on the graphics card for 4K gaming.
So... am I on the right track or am I just spinning around looking for the perfect CPU?
Your help would be greatly appreciated!
Best regards

Yes, the CPU plays the biggest role in low resolution gaming, but that doesn't mean it's ignored when using high resolutions and FPS. It still needs to send data to the GPU, which must convert it into a picture. A 9900x display can handle this, and more cores would help with other tasks too.

The RX 9070 XT is a solid 1440p card, not a 4K one. Consider upgrading to an RTX 5070 Ti or better if you're focused on performance. For those prioritizing productivity, the non-X3D SKU processor might suit you best. If gaming remains your main priority, the X3D SKU is the right choice.

I just want to express how much I value your fast responses!
It really assists me in making the correct choice.
Of course, I looked at some comparisons between the two cards and the 5070ti would be the best option for 4K with a bit higher FPS on average.
Mostly gaming, but since I play in 4K I thought a x3D CPU wouldn’t offer much extra performance compared to the 9900x, so I decided to go with the 9900x and aim for the "best" overall.
If X3D does provide a performance increase even in 4K gaming, I might consider switching and accepting a slight trade-off in work-performance.
At this point it’s starting to feel overwhelming.
