I enjoy single-player cinematic titles and usually play on a 4K TV with HDR. I’m planning to invest in an RTX 4080 for smooth AAA performance at full settings, especially with high lighting effects. My current setup is a 2080 Super that significantly drops performance when paired with an RTX 4080. My i7-8700K offers only six cores, while newer CPUs typically provide 16 or more. Regarding upgrades, a CPU change would help, but I’d also need a suitable motherboard to support the new hardware.

It varies based on your finances. A brand-new motherboard works best with a CPU that fits socket 1151 (v2), though Intel usually updates sockets after two generations.

It isn't the number of cores that is the problem (e.g. the 7800X3D, which is by far one of the best gaming CPUs only has 8), the 8700K is just dated, but there's no harm in buying the 4080 and seeing how it goes. If you're playing with max details @ 4K it will push the bottleneck to the GPU in many games. You WILL need to upgrade eventually, but you might get away with it for now.
