I've begun utilizing a part picker, though I'm puzzled as to why I didn't do that three years ago. My current setup includes an Intel Core i7-7700 CPU, an Intel Core i7-7700 GPU, a GeForce 1070 graphics card, and a Corsair 220t RGB mid-tower gaming case. For the motherboard, I'm considering options that will allow room for upgrades in the future. I intend to use an M.2 slot for Windows and basic applications. I already have ample HDDs and SSDs available for additional storage. I'm unsure why I possess so many devices.

You're restricted to these LGA1151 boards: the listed selection page. It's likely you'll choose the B250 or H270 since you can't overclock the CPU there, and most models include an M.2 port.

Consider what you need from the i7-7700K and check for compatibility concerns before purchasing.

No need to choose the 7700k instead of the 7700. Have you already acquired these components? There won’t be any compatibility problems—just not supported on B250/H270 boards, only Z270.

I own just a handful of components, so it’s mainly about upgrading an old prebuilt I had. Thought it would be a solid starting point for assembling a computer. This helps narrow down the many hundreds of choices. I’ve been working on swapping parts for better performance for years now.
