Chip failure on motherboard
I purchased this motherboard on eBay as a short-term fix until Christmas, when I’ll get my permanent one. After turning it on, I noticed a pop, smoke, and a burning odor. I’m unsure whether I should contact the seller for a replacement or just wait until Christmas arrives.
The performance boost came as expected. You might attempt to discuss it with the seller, though it’s not always their responsibility if the board failed; a partial refund could be possible. It’s curious to purchase a motherboard just before Christmas, especially since it’s only eleven days away.
The MOSFET can be swapped with a compatible part, but understanding the root cause is important. Sometimes fixing it resolves the issue, other times it signals a deeper problem elsewhere. You might repair it and test again to confirm whether the fault lies in the MOSFET itself.
The VRM size suggests overheating caused its failure. If a MOSFET fails, replacing the driver IC at the same time is usually advisable since they often go together. I'm worried about whether the MOSFET caused the CPU to lose power, as that would send direct 12V to the CPU. If the PSU's protection activated quickly enough, things might be fine. However, if the CPU dies while trying to fix the motherboard, it’s likely a waste of time, especially since it looks like an older LGA 115x chip and upgrading is usually cheaper than buying a new one.
