Chill Overclocking Case, Really!
Chill Overclocking Case, Really!
Hello everyone!
I’m reaching out for your thoughts on a solid overclocking case for a CPU with air cooling only. I was thinking about building a setup with a Ryzen 5 1600, aiming for around 4.0 GHz on a B350 motherboard paired with an RX 580 combo.
The room temperatures here can get quite high—around 25 to 30 degrees Celsius without air conditioning—which isn’t ideal for long gaming sessions. Plus, the noise from the components adds another challenge. I’m really looking for a quiet case that can keep everything cool, especially during hot summer days when temperatures might reach 40 degrees Celsius. I’m not sure if the Wraith Spire cooler will handle such heat.
What do you all think? Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
why air only?
if you aim for overclocking with high ambient temperatures, you must utilize the case and its full airflow capacity.
still, it will run quite warm—typically above 70°C during load and around 40°C at idle.
you should choose the best air cooler available within your budget.
what other specifications are planned for your machine besides the air cooler, the R5 1600, and the RX580?
Hi there!
Indeed, I require maximum cooling performance. With the RX 580 GPU, MSI B350 Bazooka motherboard, and Ryzen 5 1600 CPU, here’s what I have:
Power Supply - XFX XT 500W Bronze
RAM - Corsair vengeance LPX
CPU Cooler - Scythe Ninja 4
Storage - Not applicable at the moment
Case - Some research done, but I need assistance with the final choice.
Remark: The Air 240 case wasn’t referenced.
I also own a Ryzen 5 with an RX 580, but I'm using an R5-1400 paired with a Thermaltake Contac Silent 12. The CPU stays under 60c during prime95 stress tests. I've overclocked it to 3.7ghz. Be cautious with the B350 boards; my MSI B350M Gaming Pro has a voltage cap of 1.4v, which limited me to 4ghz, so I settled on 3.7ghz at 1.265v. My RX 580 is a Sapphire Pulse and tends to get quite hot. I'd recommend a case with strong airflow toward the GPU since it will likely be the main heat source.

I also have a Ryzen 5 with an RX 580. But I'm using an R5-1400 with a Thermaltake Contac Silent 12, and the CPU doesn't exceed 60c under prime95. I've overclocked it to 3.7ghz. I need to be careful with the B350 boards—I have the MSI B350M Gaming Pro, which has a voltage limit of 1.4v, so I couldn't reach 4ghz and ended up at 3.7ghz at 1.265v. My RX 580 is a Sapphire Pulse and it gets quite hot... I think I should use a case with strong airflow toward the GPU since the 580 will likely be your main heat source.
Hi, that's the same GPU I was considering (Sapphire Pulse)! I wasn't aware the voltage limit for B350 boards was so high—definitely a tricky issue... Well, yes, I've heard the RX580 runs hotter than the competition (GTX 1060). But it turned out to be lower than the RX480, though I didn't remember the brand. Also, what case do you use? And how are your ambient temperatures?

Hi, that’s the same GPU I was considering (Sapphire Pulse)! I wasn’t aware the voltage limit for B350 boards was so high—definitely a challenge. That’s a bit of a bummer... Anyway, I’ve heard the RX580 generates more heat than the competition (GTX 1060). But it’s still lower than the RX480, though I’m not sure which brand. What case are you using? Also, what are your room temperatures like?
Cool! The Sapphire Pulse is amazing! One of the main reasons I chose it. Here’s my build:

My ambient temps sit between 20-22°C. From my build, my case isn’t ideal for GPU cooling—it only has one intake and one exhaust. The card idles at around 45c (fan stop), and with full load it climbs into the high 70s.

I also have Ryzen 5 with an RX 580. However, i'm running an R5-1400 with a Thermaltake Contac Silent 12 and the CPU doesn't break 60c under prime95. I have it overclocked @ 3.7ghz. Be careful with the B350 boards, mine is the MSI B350M Gaming Pro and it has a voltage limit of 1.4v which is why I couldn't get to 4ghz so I settled on 3.7 @ 1.265v. My RX 580 is the Sapphire Pulse and it does get pretty warm... I would get a case that has good airflow towards the GPU as I think the 580 will be your main sorce of heat generation.
Hi, that's the same GPU I was eyeing to get (Saphire Pulse)! Hmm... I didn't know the voltage was limited for b350 boards that much. Thats a sore point I guess...oh well. Yes I heard about the RX580's higher temps than the competition (GTX 1060). However it was proven to be lower than the rx 480, though I forgot which brand. Btw what case do you use?Plus what are your ambient temperatures like?
Cool! The Sapphire Pulse is GORGEOUS! One of the main reasons I bought it. Here is my build:
https://pcpartpicker.com/b/QQq48d
My ambient temps are 20-22c. As you can see from my build, my case is not good for GPU cooling as it only has 1 intake (top) and 1 exhaust. My card idles @ 45c (fan stop) and with 100% load it goes up to the high 70's.
Awesome case! Very aesthetically pleasing with black and white color scheme with red accents, your cpu, it is clocked quite high at 3.7 GHz and I heard that the stock cooler can't compete with other stock ryzen coolers (Wraith Spire
in particular) but I don't recognize the case, is it a custom one? Which case would you recommend for a high overclock?

Thanks. Yes, the cooler that the R5-1400 came with is the Wraith Stealth, I achieved the same clock with the stock cooler but the temps were in the low 70's and was a little hotter than I wanted which is why I upgraded the cooler. The case is from geeekstore.com, all of their cases are acrylic.
As far as a case recommendation for you, if it was me with those parts I would consider the Fractal Define Mini C. It's smaller than the Define S you mentioned but still supports all of your parts. Also, do you have the am4 bracket for that cooler? It doesn't look like it ships with one. You may have to contact Scythe for that.

Hmm...define mini C seems like a great case, very similar to Define S, with optical drive bays!! It is more expensive in my area though, I have asked the store that sells the components and they tell me that the brackets (AM4) have not been shipped to them yet and my best bet would be to get an asus board which is compatible with AM3 brackets and get a cooler master cpu cooler :/
What other cases would make good enclosures, besides the Mini C, The zalman z9 neo looks cool but I wonder if the cooling would be enough as it seems to have smaller ventilation gaps in the front and top panel.
