Hello, I hope this message finds you well. I’m considering upgrading my CPU from an aging I7-4790k to a newer model. I currently have it installed on my Asrock Z390 Pro 4 motherboard with 2x8 GB of DDR3 RAM. My main gaming needs are for titles like Arma 3, and I also enjoy newer games such as BFV or AC Odyssey. I feel my current CPU isn’t performing optimally anymore.

I’m keeping my motherboard and RAM because I believe the 16GB still works fine. However, my motherboard only has a 1150 socket, and most guides suggest CPUs with at least a 1151 socket—like the Intel I5-9400f. That means I’d need to replace my motherboard, which would lead me to consider an MSI Z390-A.

I’m interested in this option because it allows me to keep my GPU (RX Vega 56 8GB) and might be a solid setup overall. My main questions are:

- Is upgrading now worth it?
- Would pairing the RX Vega 56 with an Intel I5-9400f and an MSI Z390-A make sense, or are there better CPU/motherboard choices?
- Is the MSI Z390-A compatible with my DDR3 RAM, or would I need to switch to DDR4?

Z390 doesn't work with DDR3. Avoid purchasing it. The Ryzen 5 3600 outperforms the i5 9400F in all aspects. Consider the 3600 paired with a B450 Tomahawk or Steel Legend.

If needed, you could use adapters or choose a motherboard with DDR3 slots, though these options are often less attractive and native support is limited. Z390 and B365 are both outdated solutions. The 9400F is becoming a relic and is being superseded by the 10400.

The B365 motherboard provides similar performance at a significantly lower cost. It doesn’t require high-speed RAM, making the 2666 MHz limit irrelevant, and CPU overclocking isn’t possible.

It’s important to note that moving from the i7-4790K to the i5-9400F isn’t really a performance boost. The latter is a lower-clocked model, and with your motherboard, you can easily push the 4790K beyond it.

The Z390 chipset isn't compatible with the 4790K. It seems you're unsure if you own a 4790K or a Z390 Pro4.
