I’ve experienced an issue with my XPS 17 (9730) after the warranty expired. The internal screen stopped functioning, though other parts of the system operated normally. I’m pretty sure the display is still working, but the main board seems faulty. I’m seeking advice on confirming this, understanding repair possibilities, and whether I can fix it myself.

Here’s a summary of what I know:

- Dec 11: Internal screen failed to activate; system light flashed amber and white.
- Diagnostic message: “BIOS recovery image not found.”
- Resolution suggested: Flash the latest BIOS version or replace the system board.
- Logs revealed a Thermal Event Log entry for LCD Panel Failure on Dec 11 and Dec 12.
- Recent changes: System light changed to a different code (4 amber, 3 white).
- Device Manager showed a BIOS error; photos attached.
- After flashing the BIOS, the issue disappeared temporarily.
- Graphics drivers are up to date; touch interaction works with external screens.
- When using an external display, I’ve tried updating, repairing, and even rolled back BIOS, but nothing resolved it.
- Occasionally the internal screen would briefly activate, then fade to white over minutes.
- I’m considering replacing the system board or swapping parts, but I want to avoid buying new hardware.

I’m open to suggestions and any tips you might have.

You might attempt to start your computer using a live Ubuntu USB drive to determine if the issue lies with hardware or software. The setup depends on the design of your device. Many laptops have soldered CPUs, which you can likely replace with a spare without advanced tools. The same applies to GPUs. Reach out to Dell for assistance and get some suggestions—preferably free ones. Also, contact a repair shop to discuss the problem; they usually provide a complimentary quote. Confirm details before accepting any estimate and review their recommendations. Good luck!

I've owned a Dell XPS 17 once or twice. If you have the motherboard part number, you'll notice both the CPU and GPU are permanently attached to the board—swapping them isn't possible. No. I recently acquired an XPS 17. It was likely a premium model such as the 9735 series. A replacement board would cost near $400, while the most affordable option was about $150–200. The one I own has similar issues except the display seems intact; I'm unsure and hesitant to spend more if the screen is faulty. This might be a common problem with the line.
