Checking performance on a GTX 970 with Oculus Rift.
Checking performance on a GTX 970 with Oculus Rift.
VR headsets for PC gaming tend to be costly, so I began searching for cheaper options. In short, I initially thought about purchasing a budget kit for my Android phone just to try VR, then considered upgrading to a newer phone for sharper visuals and better performance. I checked out the P10 model since it wasn’t too pricey. Later, I received advice about Google Daydream compatible devices for a smoother VR experience, which led me to explore the Samsung Gear VR 2017 version on the S8. The price shifted from very affordable to more expensive than the Oculus with touch controllers. My main question is whether the Oculus will deliver a satisfying experience on a GTX 970. Before diving into alternatives, I assumed the setup would be poor on that graphics card, as Nvidia lists it as the lowest VR-ready option (and the GTX 960 isn’t marked as "VR Ready"). On the Oculus Rift site, the GTX 970 is listed as a recommended alternative. Thanks for your assistance!
It could simply function then. So it seems like a fairly average VR session—maybe just working or I misread? Would you suggest the Oculus with a GTX 970? I’m not just after intense gaming, but also wanting to enjoy VR games, watch videos, use Tilt Brush, and more.
It should function properly. Lower graphics options are possible, but it should still meet the requirements for Google Earth and VR videos.
It's great you're thinking about these details! You'll want to check how well the graphics handle lower settings in both VR and regular viewing. Many users find that even with reduced quality, the experience remains satisfying.
It wouldn't be a good idea to use VR games on a 970 system, especially since upgrades are recommended. However, you can still enjoy them at lower settings.
I should clarify exactly which VR titles interest me. I’m unsure if anyone has mentioned NerdCubed before, though he used to share VR games often. The most recent VR video was a bit different... My focus is on the types of VR experiences he’s shown—more laid-back or artistic games rather than fast-paced shooters with high graphics. For instance, he’s played Tilt Brush, The VR Museum of Fine Art, The Lab, Google Earth VR, and Job Simulator. I’m really into this kind of genre, not the more action-oriented, visually flashy ones.
