We might encounter Thunderbolt 4 on future X570S boards—just thinking about it! If you know anything concrete or skeptical, I’m really listening.
Thunderbolt is a technology developed by Intel and Apple. Although AMD has indicated they won’t restrict any motherboard makers from including it, they won’t cover the licensing costs—the responsibility falls on each manufacturer to pay separately for each model featuring the feature.
I'm not anticipating TB in the X570S or other AMD chipsets. I'm wondering if they'll be added by motherboard manufacturers, similar to what's seen in the ASUS ProArt B550 Creator (TB4, but B550 instead of X570) or the ASRock X570 (X570 but TB3 not 4). USB4 should work fine as long as it connects to current TB3 and upcoming TB4 devices. We'll find out how this turns out. My belief is that USB 4 implementations will show different compatibility levels with Thunderbolt devices. Thunderbolt 4 expands on USB4 with a significant overlap, which I think is a positive step. USB 4 also builds upon Thunderbolt 3, since ports can't be simple and full compatibility isn't guaranteed. It's frustrating right now, but at least things should get better compared to USB 3.2 and Thunderbolt 3.
