I switched to a XFX 480 for smoother BF1 playback at a higher frame rate. Despite the upgrade, my system still lags on medium settings. Could the CPU be limiting performance or would adding more RAM help?

It seems the game relies heavily on the CPU. On my 2500K, upgrading from 760 to RX 480 didn’t offer much improvement.

GPUs are unlikely to replace physics-related tasks anytime soon. While Nvidia offers strong capabilities, the gaming community seems hesitant about adopting them for this purpose.

It seems your processor might be the issue since Battlefield 1 demands a lot of CPU power. Upgrading to an AMD FX 8350 or an Intel i7 4790 could help improve performance.

Would adding an overclock to the 8320 provide significant benefits or only small improvements?

I would test it and observe the outcome.

It shows that having more than 8GB of RAM improves performance in BF1.
