Hello everyone, I have a query about upgrading my gaming rig. I currently have an i5 8600k running at 5.0GHz and am considering moving to a 3080 graphics card. I’m curious about the main limitation if I upgrade the GPU. I know CPU speed still matters for games, so I think a 6-core processor at that frequency would likely perform better than a Ryzen 3800x even with fewer cores. Thanks ahead! ~Stocey

This CPU offers much more than just speed; its higher clock rates make it faster overall. Since the Core 2 era, improvements in IPC have become crucial. A 2.0 GHz Core 2 CPU easily beats a 3.2 GHz Pentium 4. For your 8600k model, upgrading to a 3080 won’t cause major bottlenecks and will still give you a noticeable boost over the 2080 Super. Streaming or recording while gaming might be challenging, but otherwise, it’s not worth the investment unless you’re seeking top-tier performance. Spending around $200–300 just for extra frames isn’t justified in my view. Better use that money for a nice evening out with your partner—or for another upgrade later.

We're seeing more core usage, and Ryzen isn't performing well in high FPS scenarios. The 8-core 3800X includes two 4-core CCX units that need to communicate, causing delays. That's why Ryzen struggles with top-tier gaming. In contrast, the Ryzen 5 3600 performs better than the 8600K in certain titles. If you're happy with the i5, you can stick with it until the 12th generation or Zen 4 (avoid the 11th and Zen 3). But if not, consider upgrading when Zen 3 arrives and compare it to the 10th-gen Intel or a solid Z390/Z370 if you have one.
