It seems Windows 7 is likely the version in question, unless there was an unusual release. It's possible they began offering Windows 8 as a default starting from Ivy Bridge. The details might not be entirely accurate.

I believe the drive is malfunctioning, haha. There are cracks on the screen. If I fell like that, it wouldn’t protect the HDD.

If the drive isn't working, don't spend time setting up a new operating system. Just swap it out first.

I'm stuck in high school, and I think he likely isn't either. Probably has to wait until the drive stops working completely before his parents can fix it. That's how things are around here. This is just to support him right now.

The CoA at the bottom of the laptop determines the Windows version you install; otherwise, you'll need to purchase a new Windows license, which could cost more than just replacing the hard drive. Unless you already own an unused Windows copy...

Setting up an operating system on a failing drive is counterproductive. It risks data loss and interruptions when the drive fails, especially if he relies on the laptop for school or work. You’d be assisting by persuading his parents to replace the device entirely—or at least the storage drive—if it’s essential to his routine. Otherwise, addressing the issue at this point is like trying to fix a broken engine on a vehicle that’s already been through several rough rides with neglectful owners who haven’t maintained it properly.

From their site, MS deleted every version of Windows 7 and 8.1. Now you can only find Windows 10 there.

I recall Microsoft mentioning they would take away the ISOs. Grab them now while they last. You won’t be able to access them afterward.
